Star Wars fans, you better take a seat with this one. Disney has just announced its plans to buy up LucasFilm from George Lucas and has plans to release Episode 7 in 2015. While there are no release dates for Episodes 8 and 9, they’ll be coming too, and there are plans for more every 2-3 years.
Lucas will be receiving half of the $4.05 billion of the deal and also 40 million stock shares. Lucas said tat it was time for him to pass on Star Wars to a new generation of filmmakers and e always believed Star Wars could live beyond his lifetime and wanted to set up the transition during is lifetime.
Under the new deal, Disney is to own all of LucasFilm’s assets, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones and their subsidiaries, including ILM, LucasArts and Skywalker Sound. Disney plans to let ILM work it’s magic (no pun intended) as usual, but the odd thing was Indiana Jones was not talked much, as there may be some problems with the distributor of that franchise: Paramount.
Disney also mentions that they plan to have more TV presence for Star Wars, alongside parks and resort business. There will be more Star Wars games, mainly on the mobile and social front, but there will be new console games too. Te door will be left open for licensing to other game devs and publishers
This could be a new beginning for the franchise, even though there is quite a bit of uproar from the fans. Or it could end up like the Republic and fall apart, and I hope it doesn’t come to that for the franchises that are under LucasFilm’s umbrella.
